DL-01 Internal Components Diagram

Built for the Field

Every component is selected for reliability in harsh outdoor environments. The sealed polycarbonate enclosure protects sensitive electronics while allowing solar charging and antenna operation.

  • RAK4631 WisBlock Core with LoRa SX1262
  • 10,000uF capacitor bank (green cylinder)
  • 3000mAh LiPo pouch battery
  • Terminal block for motor connections
  • NFC tag for easy device pairing
  • RP-SMA antenna connector (weatherproof)

Firmware Options

Ships with modified Meshtastic firmware, but the RAK4631 hardware supports multiple protocols

LoRaWAN

Enterprise-grade LPWAN protocol. Requires gateway infrastructure but provides reliable, long-range connectivity to cloud services.

Advantages

  • Direct cloud/internet connectivity
  • Proven enterprise reliability
  • Standardized protocol (interoperability)
  • Excellent for permanent installations
  • Lower power than mesh networking
  • Scales to thousands of devices

Considerations

  • Requires LoRaWAN gateway infrastructure
  • Gateway setup and maintenance costs
  • Network server subscription may apply

Amazon Sidewalk

Leverage Amazon's neighborhood mesh network. Uses existing Echo and Ring devices as gateways for free connectivity.

Advantages

  • Free network - uses existing Echo/Ring devices
  • Massive coverage in residential areas
  • AWS IoT integration built-in
  • No gateway purchase required
  • Automatic firmware updates

Considerations

  • Coverage limited to populated areas
  • Dependent on neighbor device availability
  • Amazon ecosystem lock-in
  • Lower bandwidth than dedicated LoRaWAN

Recommended approach: Start with Meshtastic for rapid deployment and field testing. Once your installation locations are finalized, consider adding a LoRaWAN gateway for permanent internet telemetry. The same DROP LINK hardware can be reflashed to LoRaWAN or Sidewalk firmware at any time.

Command Reference
